A Runner Today, A Physician Tomorrow
This small town saw the arrival of this young girl back in 1984, and she brimmed with great dreams of becoming a runner that will compete in the Olympics one day. In four short years, her greenish brown eyes have seen it all. Back in 1988, she won sixth place during the Olympics in Seoul, Korea specifically in the 3,000 meter run. Finally last December, this world class athlete saw her graduation from this local school. Being known as the princess of American middle distance running only at 23 years of age, she was able to bag herself an endorsement deal with a famous shoe brand. Although for now, this young girl from Delaware remained where she is. While doing her usual workouts, she goes around the environs of her campus. This young athlete standing at 5 foot 6 and weighing 110 pounds make sure her feet barely hit the ground as she runs to her own finish line. She is always awkward with her newfound fame especially when people ask for her autograph. She is such a humble young girl who claims to be a normal person she gets bothered when she gets special treatment.
Though truly normal, she is light years from being average. In her town, she is the first female Olympian. She has already seized four American collegiate records and above that, she is one of the great members of not just six but seven world record relay teams. During the Big East competition, their school won 14 championship awards as well as 8 individual NCAA championship titles all thanks to her leadership. She has also driven herself to achieve a lot of the bigger honors.
Now that she has surpassed collegiate competition, along with their school track coach, she is carefully assessing how to go about with her running career. It’s a big change with a lot of mental adjustments to make. The only way for people to truly understand it is if they’ve been through it. With the way she challenges herself to succeed as an athlete, she is bound to feel a lot of pressure. People would ask if the local woman’s track team could still go on without her leadership. She confidently shares that they are a great team on their own. The notoriety, the pressures, and responsibilities make her value her privacy. Even within their home, her parents and siblings all had to adjust to the fact that they are now recognized to be related to her. You would be surprised and envious of the company she keeps, thanks to her stardom. Her friends are just the most successful and well known athletes that we can only see on the television. While she does name drop, this is without any hints of pretention since she has nothing but true affection and concern for these great people that share with her a common link. Such is an example upon returning from Hawaii last June, from the tour that reunited her with another runner, she shared that it was way back in the Olympics when she last saw him. She truly enjoyed the three days they had fun and talked about the old times.
The things she needs to do hasn’t shortened at all while she admits to having more time than she wants. She is truly busy for as a public icon, she doesn’t just go to hr daily practices but she also has to present during certain track meets and be in photo sessions, banquets and interviews. On top of it all, this generous lady will share her time and abilities by being a volunteer assistant coach at their local school.
In keeping up with the medical aspiration she has put on hold, she also aims to volunteer on one of the area hospitals. That may help the former psychology and premed major decide whether to continue with medicine once she’s finished running professionally. How does she see herself a few years from now? While she wants to have a happy family of her own, she shares that it will have to wait until she has become an established runner. She shares that before anything else, she wants to attain her goals and wants first.
