Before your restaurant opens you will need to hire some employees and the number you hire depends on what your hours of operation will be and what size of restaurant you have. Know what positions you want to fill as well. There should also be enough time for proper training.  Be sure to find the best employees to add to the success and reputation of your restaurant. You want people who will be responsible, dependable and will always be putting forth their best effort. The reputation and success of your restaurant will depend a lot on what type of employees you hire.

By offering a good wage and benefits to your employees, it is more likely that you will find hard working, dedicated ones.  Happy employees are great employees.

Before you open your restaurant, you need to advertise in either the newspaper or online classifieds. Always mention in your ad what special skills you need from a working and what type of work habits you expect from them. He/she needs to enjoy working with the public, responsible and able to get along well with others.  This will weed out many of the applicants and then you can further screen them for these qualities at an interview.

Always place an ad at your local employment office. They will post the restaurant job online in the job bank section.  There are many qualifed unemployed restaurant workers who are ready and willing to work hard and take pride in working at a new restaurant.

Many restaurant owners like to hire students to work after school or on the weekends.  Just contact any of the local high schools and inquire about posting an ad with them.  Also many colleges and universities have bulletin boards with job advertisements on them. Another way to go is to look into hiring someone from a culinary college for a chef or cook position.

If you realize once your restaurant has been opened that you still need more hired help, you could get some recommendations from friends or relatives of some of your better employees. Usually great help comes in a referral.

Place an ad in your restaurant window that you’re now taking applications for a specific position. Always put a date, time frame and telephone number where and when you can be reached to help the hiring process run smoothly.  This will avoid people dropping off applications past the deadline and at all hours when you’re not prepared to speak to them.
