Remote Working Part 1 – Overview
Obviously not everyone is able to work remotely as there are some types of work that require us to go to their office or travel to perform their tasks in person. But for those of us who are allowed to work remotely then I thought it would be useful to share my experiences and give some practical guidance by putting it online in the hope that I could give others valuable timesavers for adapting to remote working or supervising remote workers.
I must tell you you that there are a lot of so called ’experts’ out there who will try and sell you online education for preposterous sums of cash, believe me you don’t have to do this.
I am blessed to be able to work in whatever location I choose and just about everyone who asks me what work I do wants to learn how I am able to work remotely. Don’t misinterpret me I am still perfecting the science of remote working as everyday I discover tribes on the web who tell me about new approaches and I am always unearthing new systems and ways that make my life simpler and increase my productivity.
Throughout the past 7 years I have steadily adapted my working practices to enable me to do the majority of my work remotely with a collection of web tools and unfaltering self discipline. One lunchtime whilst searching the net I came across Quickbooks online and this got me thinking about what just might be possible. The encounter with web based ‘on demand’ small business accounting software was a ‘light bulb’ moment for me and the start of my ‘remote working journey’.
I have got to say up front that efficiently working remotely is as much about the tools as it is about self discipline. Working remotely also means educating your co-workers, managers and clients as to what they can expect and how they will maintain contact with you.
In ‘Remote Working Part 2 – Managing yourself’ I discuss how to focus.
